LG OLED55B8P TV Review

LG OLED55B8P belongs to the cheap (compared to Signature) B8 line. This determines the choice of the model by buyers who have dreamed of purchasing an OLED TV. On these screens, you can feel the difference in reproduction: the blacks are truly charcoal, not gray, as the pixels are simply “turned off”. No problems with flare, uneven backlighting. The TV can be controlled from a distance or by voice, included in the "Smart Home" system. The device has increased integration with Smart Home, IoT, added ThinQ Al. The best sound depth in the entire LG TV lineup with a 40W audio system including 2 subwoofers and surround Dolby Atmos.

I took a closer look at the LG OLED55B8P and compared it with the competition - LG 75UK6750, LG 49SM9000.

This model participates in ranking of the best LG TVs.

Screen

LG OLED55B8P

How to convey emotions from watching video on the LG OLED55B8P screen? Imagine looking out of a perfectly clear window and viewing the landscape behind it. This is what the picture looks like on OLED55B8P. Realistic, stunningly sharp, with cinematic color reproduction thanks to the "honest" 10-bit OLED-matrix with 4K resolution. The same UHD resolution is declared in LG 49SM9000, but it does not give such rich deep blacks, contrasting colors, as well as viewing angles.

The Alpha7 Intelligent Processor, an exclusive LG TV processing technology, delivers vivid palette, deep detail as the screen comes to life.

For the model, a refresh rate of 120 Hz is declared, in other sources it is set at 100 Hz. The resolution is 3840 × 2160 px. The aspect ratio "standard" for flat TV - 16: 9. The diagonal is 55 (more precisely - 54.6) inches.

Appearance

LG OLED55B8P

Besides the screen size, OLED55B8P has many external differences from LG 75UK6750... Instead of a stand with legs - a very thin backing. When the TV is turned off, it seems that there is no frame at all - this is called Cinema Sreen. When turned on, the frame is visible, but it still remains thin, barely noticeable. On the back panel of gray plastic in the thickening of the lower part electronics and speakers are "hidden". This additionally gives stability to the entire structure, although if you have small children or animals, it is better to hang it on the wall, the mount is provided - this is VESA 300 × 200. Below is a metal silver stand, massive and stable, with a strict angular shape with the inscription LG OLED. On the front, there is minimal design, there is not a single control mechanism. A minimalistic, monolithic-futuristic design is supported. For an "emergency" situation (suddenly the remote control disappeared somewhere) there is a joystick on the back of the panel for turning on or controlling.

The model looks stylish, expensive, and the absence of unnecessary design in the design is a plus for installing the device in the living room with any interior.

Connectors

LG OLED55B8P

Wireless connectivity - via dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.2. The connectors are located on two rear pads. On the first left are antennas for terrestrial / cable TV, satellite, both with support for DVB-T2 / C / S2. Then a pair of USB ports and HDMI, on the right - an audio output for headphones, optics, connection to a wired network.

The second has three HDMIs, one with ARC support.

Sound

LG OLED55B8P

Audio System - 40W total power including 2 subwoofers. And in LG 75UK6750 only 20 watts, no subwoofer. It is difficult to reproduce high-quality and at the same time powerful stereo sound on any TV - there is nowhere to place full-fledged speakers. But in the OLED55BPLA model, the manufacturer managed to achieve good sound quality with richness and depth. There is a volume reserve, according to user reviews, in a room with an area of +/- 18 m2 just unscrew a quarter of the scale. Support for Dolby Atmos adds volume - the brand's own specialty for all models.

Additional useful features: Clear Voice III Voice Enhancer, Audio Upscaler, LD Sound Sync Brand Audio Sync, OTST Quick Tuning, Bluetooth Playback, DTS6 Decoder, Supports Dolby Digital, EAC3, HE-AAC, AAC, MP2, MP3, PCM Codecs, DTS, DTS-HD, DTS Express, WMA and aptX.

Functions

LG OLED55B8P

Smart TV with its own platform from LG. The first activation flashes over the content of the menu from the cards: applications, TV channels, signal sources and other information. The third-party app store has less variety than Android TV, but all the popular video services are available: Megogo or Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV.

The function for viewing 3600 videos is included, wireless transfer of photocells from mobile devices to iOS / Android is supported via the LG TV Plus proprietary application.

Setting - in the quick menu with symbols displayed in the column on the right. A full menu displays a large field on the left side of the screen.

Convenient device (as in LG 49SM9000) - Magic Remote. Works in two modes - classic and in the form of a mouse-pointer. There is a scroll wheel, new buttons for quick launch introduced - Netflix, Amazon.

Major upgrade 4.0 - increased integration with Smart Home, IoT and ThinQ Al supplement. Now the "smart" TV not only performs search queries, but also recognizes voice commands, for example, switch mode, start a program or application, On / Off. etc.

For gamers, there is a game mode with minimal latency and image optimization for the game console.

Advantages and disadvantages

LG OLED55B8P

Pros:

  1. OLED reproduces bright, lifelike images without losing sharpness and clarity in the corners. The black color in it is perfect, in contrast to the grayish color on the monitor LG 75UK6750.
  2. Support for any HDR standards, the presence of preset display modes.
  3. Stylish design - beautiful, aesthetic, austere. The model will become not only a favorite gathering place, but also an interior decoration.
  4. Easy to use thanks to webOS 4.0, voice control, super-convenient remote control, control from mobile gadgets.
  5. The powerful built-in media player is capable of playing heavy 4K HDR videos over USB.

Minuses:

  1. A TV is not for everyone: the price (120 thousand rubles) can be compared with buying a good used car.
  2. There is no updated HDMI 2.1 interface. In the "budget" and very "smart" LG 49SM9000, which costs 40 thousand rubles cheaper, it is already there.

conclusions

LG OLED55B8P

LG OLED55B8PLA will be able to bring new emotions from viewing with a clear, realistic picture, adding a feeling comparable to a 3D or 5D cinema. Plus bonuses, without which there will be no such perfection of the picture - support for standards, built-in modes. Very high quality sound - in terms of volume, timbre, clarity. Easy control from the remote control, voice, from a distance from a mobile gadget. You can save by paying 80 thousand rubles for a novelty in 2019 LG 49SM9000 with the same smart interface and updated HDMI. To change to LG 75UK6750, which costs 110 thousand and has indicators below in the image, I think it's not worth it.
