Sony KDL-40WD653 TV released in 2016. The model of the budget segment with not the highest quality of color rendering, contrast, average functionality in comparison with the developments of recent years. The advantages are the presence of Smart TV, although a slightly outdated version, good energy efficiency, color temperature of the image. I have prepared a review that allows you to better evaluate the features, pros and cons of this model, I have conducted a comparative analysis with other Sony TVs in this price segment.
This model participates in best Sony TVs, at rating of the best Full HD TVs and in ranking of the best Smart TV TVs.
Screen
The diagonal is 40 ”(102 cm), the resolution is Full HD (1920 × 1080 px), that is, there is no need to expect perfect clarity, since there are only 55 pixels per inch. For comparison: Sony KD-43XF7005 42 ”(108 cm) diagonal has a resolution of 3840 × 2160, which allows the manufacturer to improve the quality of display of details.
The downside is the lack of support for HDR and 4K, which are in the KD-43XF7005 model.
Viewing angles are 178 °, but according to the test results, it turned out that this figure is not entirely true. The picture is distorted with a strong deviation from the center, the colors lose brightness.
The indicators of brightness and contrast are expectedly low, which is typical for inexpensive models. Declared brightness - 350 cd / m22... When tested, a different result was obtained - 226 cd / m22... The color gamut is close to the standard, the color gamut is also at a height of 99%. But the color rendering is average. The color temperature corresponds to the standard (6500 degrees). The brightness is unevenly distributed - the level visually differs in the center and on the sides. Contrast - up to 3500: 1 at 100 cd / m2 brightness2... When the brightness is increased to 200 cd / m22 the contrast drops to 1220: 1.
Refresh rate index (50 Hz) does not allow displaying dynamic scenes without tearing. But this indicator is typical of all inexpensive models, for example, Sony KDL-40RE353... Motionflow XP technology improves display up to 200 Hz (Sony KDL-40RE353 - up to 100 Hz), but this is still not enough. If you move quickly on the screen, the image may twitch. The response time is 42 m / s even in game mode, which is unlikely for gamers.
The backlight is made across the entire surface of the screen (Direct LED), which prevents the flashing on the sides, typical of Sony KD-43XF7005 with side illumination (Edge LED). But when watching the video, it is noticeable that the backlighting is not very uniform.
Appearance
Dimensions - 924 × 549 × 66 mm, weight - 7.7 kg. Simple uncomplicated design. The screen is flat, around it there are rather wide frames of 1.5 cm. Behind the TV is a somewhat unusual angular shape in the form of a low pyramid. There are special channels for wires. This feature of the case may not give it a good look when wall-mounted. Although a standard mount of 200 × 200 mm is provided for this.
The stand is lightweight, attractive in appearance, weighing 0.4 kg, and only 21 cm deep, significantly refreshes the design. Has hollow legs for cable management. With a stand, the dimensions are 924 × 589 × 212 mm. Sony KD-43XF7005 it differs not only in its large size (970 × 630 × 279 mm), but also in its significant weight - 10.4 kg.
Connectors
A small number of connectors, but the main ones for ensuring the operation of the TV are available: SCART, 2 HDMI, 2 USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Miracast, CI + slot, headphone output. Model 2017 Sony KDL-40RE353 instead of SCART component connectors, but it does not have Wi-Fi support. Sony KD-43XF7005 provides for 3 HDMI, USB outputs, has WIDI.
Sound

Functions
Smart TV on Linux, like most budget Sony TVs (for example, KD-43XF7005). But Sony KDL-40RE353 is not equipped with Smart TV at all. Many functions are "slow" because the browser is quite slow, like Smart itself. There are few applications installed, but Opera saves the situation somewhat.
In terms of reproduction quality, the model showed mediocre results. The player does not read WMV, TS, FLV, RMVB, and sometimes even MKV, AVI files. When launching a video from a PC, it correctly stretches it regardless of the aspect ratio. Displays 1080i format clearly.
Supports 24p True Cinema, has a digital tuner, it is possible to record on media, connect to a network with other devices (DLNA).
Control is carried out by a conventional remote control, which also does not add convenience and creates certain difficulties, for example, when typing. Built-in memory - 4 GB. As with most Sony TVs, there is a child lock, a timer.
Advantages and disadvantages
Benefits:

- picture quality corresponds to the model of this price segment;
- provides good sound quality, although it loses to Sony KD-43XF7005 in power;

Disadvantages:
- slow, outdated Smart TV;
- dark spots at the edges of the screen (uneven backlighting);
- black looks grayish;
- when viewed from a side view, colors and brightness are worse;
- not very convenient remote control;
- no bluetooth.
Verdict
The price of Sony KDL-40WD653 is 34,000 rubles. Sony KDL-40RE353 worth 25,000 rubles is notable for the lack of Smart TV. Sony KD-43XF7005 for 42,000 rubles has slightly better characteristics of brightness, color and sound. In general, Sony KDL-40WD653 has low brightness, contrast and outdated Smart. For its price category, it cannot be considered a leader. But it has the lowest power consumption level - only 59 W. For comparison, the KD-43XF7005 model consumes 100 watts.
