Can the refrigerator be transported lying on its side?

How to properly transport the refrigeratorA refrigerator is an indispensable piece of household appliances in every house or apartment. When you change your place of residence or when buying a new refrigerator, the question arises how to transport the refrigerator? The transportation of such products is difficult not only due to their large size, but also due to the presence of freon in them - a substance that has increased fluidity.

Therefore, in the event of the slightest defect, the gas evaporates, and the equipment itself fails. The owner either has to contact a service center to repair the refrigerator, or even purchase a new refrigerator.

Which will entail considerable financial costs. To avoid such troubles, it is best to transport this equipment correctly right away.

In which position to transport the refrigerator - lying or standing?

Manufacturers recommend transporting such equipment only in an upright position (standing), using the original packaging, which can protect the refrigerator from shock and mechanical damage. In order to avoid leakage of freon, carrying the refrigerator (if space permits) is also carried out in a standing position.

Important:

All information regarding the connection, operation and transportation of refrigerators is in the instructions that are attached to each device.

Despite popular belief, transporting the refrigerator while lying down is highly discouraged. As this can lead to breakage or displacement of the refrigerator compressor. To avoid this, special bolts are used to fix the compressor. This is especially true when the refrigerator is transported over long distances.

In what position can the refrigerator be transported

Also, when transporting equipment in a lying position, there may be such a problem as oil spreading in the compressor or when the equipment is tilted to any side. This leads to the ingress of oil into the blower tube, as a result of which it becomes clogged, which becomes an obstacle to the normal circulation of freon. For this reason, the refrigerator ceases to fulfill its main function - food cooling.

That is why manufacturers recommend transporting equipment only in a standing position.

Preparing the refrigerator for transportation

Transporting the refrigerator, as well as all large-sized equipment, is a rather troublesome task. And the safety of the equipment depends on how correctly this operation will be performed.

If you do not yet have the opportunity to order a car with a high body in order to transport equipment in an upright position (standing), you need to know how to properly transport refrigeration equipment lying down. That is, in a horizontal position:

  • First of all, you should disconnect the refrigerator from the power supply, remove all food and defrost it;
  • All trays, shelves and other containers should be removed from the unit and packed securely in cardboard or newspapers;
  • It is also very important to securely fix the door of the device, otherwise it may come off. For these purposes, you can use plastic twine, wide tape or tie-down belts;
  • Also pay attention to the compressor before moving the refrigerator. Many manufacturers use special transit bolts on the compressor that just need to be tightened. If they are absent, then the compressor must be fixed with rubber or cardboard gaskets.
  • This household appliance must be placed in its original packaging before transportation. However, if you throw it away or it is torn, you can use cardboard or film for this purpose. The main thing is that the case is protected from scratches and other damage.

Now you need to properly prepare the vehicle itself, in which the transportation of such cold equipment will be carried out, lying (on its side). Most often, transportation crews use a Gazel truck for these purposes. The floor of the body should be covered with an old blanket or cardboard should be laid in several layers. The unit itself must be positioned lying on its side, so that the door hinges are on top, not below.

If you need to transport a Soviet-style refrigerator, you need to securely fix the compressor in a horizontal position using the specially designed transport bolts. In this case, it does not matter at what distance the transportation is carried out.

During such an event, special attention should be paid to securing the device inside the body. If it is not properly fixed, in case of unexpected braking, the refrigerator may hit the car body and be damaged. Which, of course, is highly undesirable.

When can I turn on the refrigerator after transportation?

If you were not present during the transportation of your old or new refrigerator, then first ask in what position it was transported. The fact is that manufacturers strictly do not recommend tilting the refrigerator more than 40 ° during transportation, especially modern models. In some cases, the dimensions of the refrigerator do not allow it to be transported while standing, and carriers are forced to transport the refrigerator on its side.

In this case, engine oil can leak from the compressor into the refrigerant circuit. If the refrigerator is started immediately, it will try to push the oil further along the capillary tubes. We all know that oil, unlike gaseous refrigerant, hardly compresses, and the compressor will work at its limit to push it through. If it works at the limit for a long time, in total the compressor will fail and will have to be replaced with a new one.

There are several factors that affect how long the refrigerator can be turned on after transportation:

  • If the refrigerator was transported in a horizontal position, you must wait 8-16 hours (during this time, the oil will return to its place).
  • If the refrigerator was transported in warm weather and in an upright position, it will be enough to wait 2-4 hours.
  • If the refrigerator was transported standing in the autumn or winter period, then you can turn it on no earlier than after 4-6 hours (during this time the refrigerator will heat up to room temperature and all the condensate will evaporate).

Important:

It is not recommended to immediately load empty chambers with large quantities of food. It is advisable to add a little bit so that the compressor can handle the load.

We transport the old refrigerator correctly

Here you need to follow the same steps as when transporting modern devices.That is, you need to disconnect from the mains, remove all food, defrost, pack trays and containers in cardboard, secure the door securely. It is better, of course, that the transportation of the Soviet refrigerator be carried out in an upright position, but due to its overall dimensions, this is very difficult. Therefore, the equipment is mainly transported on its side, that is, in a horizontal position.

However, secular devices are very sensitive to overturns, therefore, the compressor should be securely fixed using transport bolts to fix them. Carrying, as is the case with modern devices, should be carried out in a standing position.

Order a service or carry out all the work yourself?

There is always a temptation to perform such work without resorting to the services of specialized companies in order to save financial resources. But how justified is this economy? It all depends on the size of the refrigeration equipment. So, for example, small, single-chamber freezers can be transported independently, securely packed in cardboard or factory packaging. Especially when it comes to short distances. But what if you have to transport two-compartment, large-sized refrigerators and over very impressive distances? And what if such a refrigerator will be transported in a small truck lying down?

Here you simply cannot do without specialized help. In this case, saving will not be appropriate, moreover, it can turn into even greater costs (in case of damage due to incorrect transportation). In addition, transportation services of such a plan do not differ in high financial costs for the customer.

How are such events held in specialized companies?

This operation is carried out in several sequential stages:

  1. Assessment of the technical condition of the device (weight, dimensions);
  2. Selection of a vehicle for reliable and safe transportation;
  3. Preparing the car and refrigerator for transportation;
  4. Transportation of refrigeration equipment;
  5. Unloading and lifting to the desired floor.

After that, the company's employees can hold a consultation regarding the first connection after transportation.

The cost of such a service is not high enough to risk. Indeed, in case of unsuccessful transportation, the costs can be much more significant than payment for the work of a moving company.

Issue price

The price of such a service depends on many factors, the main of which are: the overall dimensions of household appliances, their quantity (one owner may have not only a refrigerator, but also a freezer), the distance that will need to be overcome.
However, it is worth noting that in this case, your technique is guaranteed to remain safe and sound.
