Do-it-yourself cuff replacement on a washing machine

The washing machine collar is used as a door seal. Its task is to prevent the hatch from leaking during the operation of the machine. Therefore, its importance can hardly be overestimated. Even small metal objects (coins, bra bones, etc.) or metal objects on clothes that get into the inner compartment of the machine during washing can damage the elastic on the washing machine. How to replace the rubber hatch seal with your own hands?

Consider the possible causes of the malfunction

  • wear of the hatch cuff from a long service life;
  • the cuffs are damaged by fungus;
  • splitting of rubber caused by harsh chemicals;
  • the cuff is wiped on the inside;
  • cuffs are washed off thanks to large hard things (caps, shoes, etc.);
  • also, the cuffs become defective as a result of careless packing or unloading of clothing.

How to dismantle the first clamp

To make repairs or remove the rubber band from the drum of the washing machine, you first need to remove the clamp holding the cuffs along the curved curved side. As a rule, each washing machine has either a spring or plastic clamp visible to the side of the elastic. For the correct removal of the plastic clamp, it should be pulled towards you in the area where the locks are located. If the clamp is made in the form of a spring, it is necessary to unscrew the retaining screw or simply pull the spring towards you by prying it with a screwdriver. After the clamp has been removed, the cuff that seals the hatch closure can be freely removed.

Removing the inner (second) clamp

Before removing the second clamp of the washing machine, it is necessary to carefully examine the cuffs for marks for installation. Thanks to this mark, the cuffs are located in a strict position in relation to the tank. This ensures tight closure of the hatch and proper drainage of water. In the event that it was not possible to find the mark, it should be noted on the elastic band its location in relation to the tank. Such a trifle will prove to be important when a new cuff of the washing machine is installed. Then, the grooves freed from the worn-out gum need to be thoroughly cleaned of accumulated dirt and thoroughly lubricated with soapy water. When the grooves are slippery, it will be easier to replace the cuff with a new one.

Fitting new sealing rubber

Carefully replacing the rubber seal of the hatch is a responsible matter, the serviceability of the further operation of the washing machine will depend on it. Especially if the repair is done by hand. To change the old rubber for a new one, you need to match the label of the cuff and the tank. Then insert the curved side of the cuff into the soapy grooves. To do this, you need to take the rubber by the inside and gently push it onto the rim of the tank with your fingers.But, when the main part of the rubber is already inserted, further insertion of the cuff will be difficult, since the worn side will begin to slip.

The area that has not yet been inserted, the cuff should be put on the tank ring, sliding your thumbs towards each other. When you have completely replaced the rubber, you should finally feel the entire rim of the tank to be sure of a tight fit. All repairs to the washing machine should be carried out very carefully, avoiding the use of sharp objects so that the new rubber does not break.

Installing the inner clamp

The inner clamp of the washing machine has a screw for adjustment; during installation, it should be turned to the required diameter, we put the clamp in place and press it with a screw. If the clamp is spring type, it will be slightly more difficult to replace the collars, but also doable. You will need to firmly hold the first tension point on the clamp. You need a screwdriver to hold the spring clip on the washing machine. It should be inserted into the channel that fixes the hatch all the way to the stop. After that, the spring is pulled with a screwdriver along the entire rim of the tank, placing it in the grooves.

Having put on most of the spring, it becomes difficult to hold the clamp again, since the tension angle has changed. To replace the spring clamp on older typewriters, round nose pliers are used because such springs were produced without an adjusting screw.

Fastening the first clamp

If you manage to cope with the inner clamp, the outer one can be installed without much effort. Curved round nose pliers are required to install clamps that do not contain spring or screw tensions. With their help, it is required to open the tightening hooks and install the clamp.

Check

When it was possible to replace the sealing gum of the hatch and install the clamps, you should check the repair for quality. After setting the rinsing mode, we start the device, wait two or three minutes, drain the water. When the water has disappeared, we tilt the machine in the opposite direction, and inspect the bottom of the rubber. If there are no leaks, then the repair was successful.
